Santa Clarita Newborn Photography – Common Newborn Portrait Questions

I get many inquires per week about booking a newborn session and I seem to answer the same types of questions every day. So I thought it would be a good idea to answer some of my most frequently asked questions here in a post. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding newborn photography.

Do you have studio location?

• Yes!! I have a gorgeous professional maternity, newborn and baby portraits studio located in Santa Clarita. About 20-25 minutes from Los Angeles. This is not a home or garage studio.

I am worried about the safety of my baby…

• First and foremost I am one of only two newborn photographers in ALL of Southern California that has two different safety certifications specifically for newborn photography. I have been comprehensively trained on many different aspects of keeping your newborn safe. Safety is my number one priority. Always.

• I am infant and child CPR certified

• I am up to date on my vaccinations including TDAP

Do you have all of the props?

• Yes! I have everything you see featured in the images on my website and so much more. The studio boasts a collection of hand made headbands, bonnets, outfits, wraps etc… I have an entire walk in closet dedicated to props, accessories, backdrops, custom gowns!!

• I am regularly updating and shopping for new items.

• Your newborn session will be fully styled and customized based on your color preferences. Literally all you need to do is bring me your baby, I will take care of the rest!

What is the best age range to photography my newborn?

• I like to photograph newborn between 5 and 10 days old when they are still ohhhh so sleepy, curly and snuggly. Its also best to try to capture them before the newborn acne sets in. This is not saying we cannot photograph your baby older than 10 days because we certainly can, but the best time is within the first week of life.

How far in advance should I book?

• Honestly, it’s never TOO EARLY to book your session. Booking during your pregnancy is the best way to ensure you are able to reserve a date for you session with me. The earlier the better as it is possible for me to booked up certain months of the year.

Im not really sure how what date to book with you, as I dont know if my baby will be early, late right on time…

• First of all, I view “due dates” as more of “due estimation”….There isn’t really a way of knowing EXACTLY when your little one will make their appearance. By ensuring you book a session with me (paying your deposit) guarantees you and your baby have priority on my schedule. Wether baby comes early or late you will have a spot on my schedule. I only take a limited amount of newborn session per month to accommodate various arrival dates.

• We will be in touch throughout your pregnancy and communicate about your progression. And once you either go into labor or just after you have delivered we will schedule your FINAL date for your session from your tentative date that we had previously scheduled when you originally booked.

• I typically like to schedule my newborn session for between 5 and 10 days of their birth date.

My baby is already here, can I still schedule a newborn session?

• Occasionally I will have availability. Please just reach out so we can talk about options. If you baby is a little older than “newborn” we might want to do a baby session instead.

How long does a newborn session take?

• My full newborn sessions which included family portraits can take UP TO 4 hours. This allows a little breathing room if we need extra feeding breaks and time for soothing if your little one is needing some snuggles. I will help you prepare so we can get the absolute best for your session.

How should I prepare for the newborn, what should I bring?

• Once you have booked your session I will send you over a link that will have all of the tips and tricks on how to prepare for your session. It will walk you through step by step on what to do to help have a smooth session.

Can parents and siblings be in the pictures?

• Yes! Family and sibling portraits are some of my favorite!! I 100% believe every mommy needs a portrait with the child she just carried for 9 months AND it is my goal for mom to feel beautiful and pampered which is why all of my session come with complimentary hair and make-up. I am not looking to just take pretty pictures, I want to create one of your very first bonding experiences as a new family. PLEASE bring grandma and grandpa too!

• A note about sibling portraits… Depending on the age range and cooperativeness of the older sibling I am always happy to attempt a sibling portrait along with the family portrait. Children younger than 3 and sometimes older than 3 have a very hard time adjusting…especially in those first few weeks and it can sometimes be ALOT and quite stressful for us to ask them to lay still, hold/lay their baby sibling safely in that wont hurt them, pay attention, don’t move, and smile. HAHA When I type it all out, it sounds like a lot to me! LOL With tall of that being said, I will always try, but all of my sessions a child led….so I dont attempt any portraits unless the child is willing and able to listen, especially when a newborn is involved. SAFETY FIRST ALWAYS.

Do you do in home sessions?

• In order for me to achieve the consistency you see in my body of work on my website and social media, newborn and baby sessions are held in my studio in Santa Clarita. Everything is fully prepared before you arrive. All you need to do is bring the baby and then sit back and relax, eat snacks, watch tv and revel in the experience of being pampered, having your hair and makeup done and then enjoy the beautiful bonding moments to come during your family portraits. Sounds like an amazing experience huh? I take care of it all….no need to move furniture around, heat the house to 80, feel the need to clean your house for company…simply show up and relax.

• In home session can take twice as long, adding to parents who are already beyond exhausted. Moving furniture to accommodate sets and lighting. Not to mention maintaining a proper temperature to keep your little one comfortable.

• Props – Our studio is fully equipped to accommodate all of your portrait wants and needs. As the session progresses if we need to adjust or pull or more/new props everything is right around the corner in our walk in closet.

How long until we can view our images and order products?

• After your newborn session is done we will schedule your in person viewing reveal for about 10-14 days after your portrait session date.

• At your reveal session you will be able to order matted prints, albums, wall art and digitals images. Matted prints and digitals are available to take home same day! Products such as albums, wall art and photo block are a 2-3 week turn around.

I hope that answered most of your first questions about a newborn session with me.
